Warning signs
Overflow, staining, sagging runs, peeling fascia paint, corrosion and pooling near the building deserve attention. Leaves may cause blockages, but overflow can also result from inadequate outlets, incorrect fall, crushed downpipes or poor system capacity. The cause should be identified before parts are replaced.
Planning an effective system
Roof area, local rainfall, gutter profile, downpipe size and outlet quantity affect performance. Appropriate overflow behaviour helps keep a blockage from directing water into the building. Materials and fixings should be compatible to reduce corrosion. We assess the roof edge, fascia and discharge path as one system.
Maintenance
Remove leaves, seed pods and sediment, especially around valleys and outlets. Frequency depends on nearby trees and exposure. Working at height is hazardous, so use a competent service when safe ground access is not possible. Gutter guards can reduce large debris but do not eliminate cleaning and inspection.
Responsible discharge
Downpipes need a lawful, working discharge point. Water should not concentrate against footings or flow onto neighbouring property. Stormwater connections, tanks and site drainage may need coordinated consideration. Where specialist drainage design is needed, advice should come from an appropriately qualified provider.
